    Hello friends in Germany,

Our sport has hit another patch of trouble. But when have things been smooth in recent years?

    Which countries are taking part?

The Nordic countries appear to have uniformily decided to decline to participate.

How are we going to end this cycle of conflict?

    A couple of questions:

    1) Has CMAS agreed that the odd year schedule will be respected in the future?

Would playing in an even year in violation of CMAS’s own official decision constitute a precedent that will lead to a further repetition of the practice?

    2) Is this an open championship? If teams from outside Europe take part, why call it a European Championship at all? It is just a world championship in Europe. Or?

    Hello Davrell,

no one in the forums is able to answer your questions properly. We all have to lurk around the high castle and hope for some accidentally dropped chunks of information.
I know you like to ask questions, but how about giving some answers instead? It will drain your precious energy within a few years, i tell you.

    Greetings

    Hello Davrell,
    some facts:
    – The EM at 2013 (Barcelona) was canceled.
    – The EM 2014 at Krefeld is a replacement for Barcelona.

from 2014 it is the normal period of the tournaments.
    – 2015 WM (CMAS that’s settled at Cali)
    – 2016 JEM

    – A long time the EM is an open tournament for countries out of Europe.

    This informations are not new.
    They was published last year.
You must have this informations too, because you are at the mail list.

    Greetings

Hello Felix, Winne and other forum members,

I have seen the CMAS Board of Directors official decision on the schedule. European Championships are to be held in odd years. Denmark volunteer to hold the EC instead Spain. CMAS did not like that because it created a financial conflict with the Kazan CMAS Games, a world championship level competition. Hockey got its own separate world championship in Egers, Hungary.

Why are we treated differently than hockey? The answer is that hockey is larger and has rebelled against CMAS. We need to be treated with the same respect.

Still, no one knows if the CMAS Games idea is still going to be imposed upon us. In 2017, will have the EC on schedule or will we be told to go Japan or wherever CMAS finds a venue?

CMAS has a principle: the organization shall inform sports about the date and venue two years in advance. By its own admission at the last board meeting in October, CMAS wrote that it had never met this standard, ever.

    re: the failure of Barcelona
The Sport President at the time was Xavier Duran (now VP of CMAS). He is also the head of the Spanish underwater federation. How is it that the EC failed to take place. He was in charge in Spain and in CMAS. He did not have to call a lot of people to figure out what was going wrong. If the local UWR club in Barcelona could not manage, he should have told the community and UWR Commission early enough to find an alternative.

By the way, the Russian underwater federation has kicked Betta out of the national league. The head of the Russian underwater federation is Anna Arzhanova, the President of CMAS.

    Scotti,

Pardon me for writing in English. I will add a Google translate translation and hope the others alert you to any mistakes.

    re: Betta
Accorind to Victor Krylov, the Russian UW Federation does not support UWR as a sport. She redefined UWR as a so-called „tourism“ sport. With this decision she canselled the Russian Championships.

„So we couldnt became a champions of our country from this moment. It’s very pity to hear for all people who believe in uw rugby in Russia.“

He added that they will transfer their energy to the European League because they have no choice.

After the cancellation of the national championships, Betta quit paying membership fees in protest. Now it is unclear if they can come to the Champions Cup. It may be that the Russian federation will declare the other club champions, even though they cannot beat Betta.

It would seem that the Russian federation wants to break the will of Betta. It was very awkward that the Federation was making a large profit selling CMAS licenses to the Russian players. The Kazan CMAS Game had to cancel UWR. Does Arzhanova feel anger or resentment to our sport for not supporting the Kazan decision? You be the judge.

As to the European junior championships, I am unaware of any CMAS decision on their calendar. The regular EC are to take place in odd years. I have a copy of the CMAS’s decision somewhere.

I agree with you fully that we should work together. I would have liked to see the European Championships take place in Germany but clearly the Nordic federations have spoken in one voice of protest. Has that made any impression on the CMAS leadership? If compromise must come only from the athletes to their leaders – and no member of CMAS leadership has any background in underwater rugby – the conflict will not heal.

When the World Championships take place in Cali, CMAS has the right to send one or two of its officials to to the competition. They have a right to have all the costs, including the best hotel and all meals, paid for by the players. Remember in Helsinki Xavier Duran, then Sport Committee President, came to the opening ceremony and left without watching a single game. He has been promoted to Vice President of CMAS. For Apnea he has put on his wetsuit and gotten in the water to watch.

I hope that uwr1.de will run an article on the situation in UWR from the Germany perspective, including some explanation of the sports relations with VDST.

  7. Anya7 schreibt:

Betta didn’t get kicked out, they just refused to pay the license since Arzhanova said uwr is not a real sport and there will be no Russian championship.

    Scotti ,

Not a „real“ sport? That has to be a joke.
I consider this as an insult to everyone who loves and plays UWR.
And even so: what is the meaning of „tourism“ sport, this doesn’t make sense to me.

Btw, based on the talks to other players and these messages in the forum I’m not sure if there will be a german championship this year. It is less than three months until May and we neither have a venue, a club nor a date.

    Hello Davrell,

it seems my english is good enough for this Forum, I couldnot believe that Betta is kicked out from the UWR Boss in russia.

Our Sport will get more Reputation from the officials, if we work on the Basics:
A Euroleague is a fantastic Idea, but some years to early. The results and the interest of Teams show this very clearly.

Sport officials rate a Sport on different things as we do.

    They expect

    Education and Training of coaches
    youth development and youth teams
a certain number of aktive Players

It is neccessary to work on this.

Last week we started a coach education for 20 new coaches in Germany, in the last ten years we have educated about 40 more coaches here.

15 years ago we started youth development in Germany, the result is about 150-200 young Players now.

About our Clubs activities you can see a Video on our HP http://www.uwr-malsch.de, by far not so professional and spectacular as the Videos of Europa-league.

  11. Davrell Tien schreibt:

    Hello Scotti,

I know Germany is doing well in building the next generation. The Nordic countries, excpet Norway, are struggling. So in a few years time Germany and Norway may dominate. We shall see.

We need youth programs everywhere. The lack of pools is one important cause but it can be solved if there are enough parents pressuring the authorities. However, you need a youth program to get parents involved: a classic chicken and egg dilemma.

Areas that we can change things:

    1) We must work to introduce our sport to the Military World Games. It is perfect for frogmen, underwater demolition, the commandos.

    2) We should expand the European League if possible. It is keeping the interest of the top players. Teams from Germany are very much desired in the European League. The clubs that are active have expressed a desire to compete against German teams. There could be two tiers of competition, with the top clubs moving up and lowest team suffering demotion. The second division matches could be played in Germany so that Czech, Austrian, Hungary, Turkey, etc could even meet Nordid teams. Getting to Molde is pretty expensive. Getting Berlin or maybe even Prague wouldn’t be too bad.

    3) The top women clubs also need to compete more.

    4) Can we not find a way to get Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and the Ukraine started?

    5) We need a pool designed for UWR so that TV coverage can be easier and better.
